Abstract

Essential oils have emerged as valuable components in modern pharmaceutical and therapeutic applications, representing a bridge between traditional medicine and contemporary evidence-based healthcare. These complex mixtures of volatile compounds derived from aromatic plants possess diverse pharmacological activities that have garnered significant scientific attention. This review article examines the multifaceted role of essential oils in pharmaceutical practice, focusing on their chemical composition, biological activities, and therapeutic potential. The chemical diversity of essential oils, characterized by terpenoids, phenylpropanoids, and other bioactive molecules, underlies their wide-ranging pharmacological effects. Particular emphasis is placed on antimicrobial properties against resistant pathogens, anti-inflammatory mechanisms involving cytokine modulation and enzyme inhibition, and analgesic effects mediated through various receptor pathways. The article discusses contemporary formulation strategies that address the inherent challenges of essential oil incorporation into pharmaceutical products, including volatility, instability, and poor aqueous solubility. Clinical evidence supporting therapeutic applications in respiratory disorders, dermatological conditions, pain management, and psychological wellness is critically evaluated. Safety considerations, including potential toxicity, allergenic reactions, and herb-drug interactions, are addressed alongside regulatory frameworks governing quality control and standardization. The future of essential oil therapeutics lies in developing standardized extracts with consistent bioactivity, advancing novel delivery systems such as nanoformulations and transdermal patches, and establishing robust clinical evidence to support integration into conventional medical practice. This comprehensive review provides researchers, clinicians, and pharmaceutical scientists with current knowledge on essential oils as therapeutic agents.
