Abstract

Phytopharmaceuticals represent a scientifically validated class of plant-derived therapeutic products requiring rigorous standardization and quality control to ensure clinical efficacy, safety, and regulatory compliance. The inherent chemical complexity and variability of botanical materials pose substantial challenges to reproducibility, necessitating advanced analytical strategies and robust quality assurance frameworks. This review critically examines the contemporary approaches to phytopharmaceutical standardization, emphasizing marker-based characterization, chemical fingerprinting, and multi-platform analytical methodologies including chromatographic, spectroscopic, and hyphenated techniques. The integration of chemometric analysis, omics technologies, and artificial intelligence-driven quality prediction systems is transforming traditional quality control paradigms. Regulatory frameworks established by the World Health Organization, European Medicines Agency, and United States Food and Drug Administration provide essential guidelines for good manufacturing practice implementation, yet significant gaps persist in harmonization and standard reference material availability. The translational relevance of stringent quality control extends beyond regulatory compliance to encompass therapeutic consistency, pharmacovigilance, and evidence-based clinical acceptance. Current challenges include biological variability management, analytical method validation across diverse matrices, scalability of advanced techniques to industrial settings, and the establishment of universal quality benchmarks. Future perspectives highlight the potential of portable analytical devices, real-time quality monitoring, blockchain-enabled traceability, and integrated quality-by-design approaches. This review provides pharmaceutical scientists, regulatory specialists, and quality control professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the analytical, regulatory, and translational dimensions of phytopharmaceutical quality assurance.
